OLLI WEDNESDAY PRESENTATION SERIES: DR. ANNE FOSTER In-Person
Anne L. Foster is a professor of history at Indiana State University, specializing in U.S. foreign relations, imperial history, and the history of drugs and food. She has been part of the university since 2003 and holds a PhD and MA in History from Cornell University, along with a BA in History and International Relations from American University. Her research primarily examines the transnational and transimperial dynamics of U.S. involvement in Southeast Asia. In 2019, she served as a visiting fellow at the Roosevelt Institute for American Studies in the Netherlands.
In light of a recent decline in drug overdose deaths in the U.S. after several years of increases, Foster's new book, The Long War on Drugs, critically analyzes the enduring complexities of American drug policy. Despite widespread acknowledgment of its failures, the war on drugs continues to be a political focus. Foster's work delves into the historical context of drug use and regulation in the U.S., aiming to understand why drug consumption persists and why politicians remain committed to policies that have proven ineffective.
